The first quiz game shipped in 1982.

Four kids gave up recess to program an Apple II. One of them spent his machine time building a quiz to drill his classmates. He never really stopped.

In the fall of 1982, a third-and-fourth-grade open classroom became one of the early testbeds for Logo — the turtle-graphics language Seymour Papert built at M.I.T. to let children command computers instead of being drilled by them. Four Apple II machines sat in continuous use. The kids named them John, Paul, George and Ringo, and were delighted to learn the Beatles had gotten to the name “Apple” first.

The fourth grader in the photo had roughly two and a half weeks of screen time when the reporter came through — and he was already building for other people. His project: a program to quiz classmates on their multiplication. A question engine, a live audience, instant scoring. In 1982, that was a kid cutting recess. In 2026, it's called a product roadmap.

The kicker the editors chose — a student describing her program on screen — is still the best QA report ever filed.

The class typed this to make the turtle draw a square. STX.BUZZ runs on hexagons now — but it's the same instinct: give people a machine they can command, keep score, and make it fun enough to skip recess for.
